Woodworm

There are several species of wood-boring beetle, but the most common species found in Ireland is the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum). These are small, dark reddish-brown beetles, typically measuring between 3 and 5 mm in length, with a distinctive hood-like shape covering the head.

The image below illustrates the similarities in the damage caused by different species of wood-boring beetle and can provide a useful indication of a possible infestation.

Another type of wood-boring insect commonly encountered is the weevil. These insects are often found around the edges of floorboards and in areas of damp skirting boards. The presence of small piles of frass, which can resemble fine sawdust, around the edges of flooring may be an indication of weevil activity.

Quite often, damage caused by woodworm has already occurred by the time an infestation is identified. This is largely due to the life cycle and behaviour of wood-boring beetles.

In many cases, the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum) is responsible. Adult beetles emerge from the timber, typically between April and September, leaving behind the characteristic small exit holes that are often the first visible sign of an infestation.

However, these visible holes may only represent the final stage of a much longer process. The beetle can remain within the timber in its larval stage, feeding and tunnelling through the wood, for approximately 3 to 5 years before emerging as an adult.

The presence of woodworm damage does not necessarily mean that the affected timber has been structurally compromised. The extent and significance of any damage should be assessed as part of a thorough inspection. Where necessary, targeted treatment can then be recommended to address active infestation and help prevent further deterioration.
